I would like to tell you a little about myself before we get into campaign issues. We moved to LS in 1988 and our 3 children all graduated from LSR7 schools and are successful adults. My oldest grandson graduated from LSN last year so my roots run deep in this community. I married Penny about 11 years ago and between us, we have 14 grandchildren to keep us busy. My trade is Tool and Die Maker and I held different leadership positions in industry. I chose to leave industry and enter college teaching ten years ago as a way to give back to the next generation.
Penny and I renovate old houses in our spare time. We recently took on an 1880 two-story in Independence which the neighbors thought would have to be torn down. It is now a beautiful home to a young couple and their two kids. We listed it and one day I drove up to find a young couple on the side porch. They lived a block away and had watched us rebuilding it. Though they showed no interest in buying, I invited them to see the inside. We like to show off our work. As the tour ended, I explained that we are both Christians so we don't believe in hiding things or covering up stuff. We fix it and do our best to fix it right. He said he was a pastor at a local church and they went home and decided to move. Penny and I attend Fellowship Church Greenwood Campus and are active in different activities.
People ask me why I left the technical industry to become a college teacher. My base pay dropped substantially. I tell them it is because I care. Like most teachers at any level, I care for the next generation. Not everything in life is about the money. I am blessed with excellent training and great opportunities. I wanted to pass my knowledge and experience on to the young people coming up looking for a better life. In school, I had caring teachers who poured their lives into me and helped my parents shape me into the man I am today. LSR7 had many teachers who poured their lives into my children in the same way. We still have many top-notch teachers and coaches today. With teachers, it's not about seeing how much we can get but rather about how much we can give. Do you realize how many teachers dip into their own pockets to buy supplies for students who show up without? Therefore, I fully support the levy transfer which is not raising taxes. I hope you will too. We can do better. Our children deserve it
I had a wonderful opportunity to speak at the Gamber Center hosted by Parents Changing Education (PCE). I love things like this because it gives us a chance to tell voters what we believe. We answered questions from PCE and then ones submitted by the audience.
I want to be known as being open and honest. I have opinions and I want to share them with you. If you are like-minded, please vote for me so we an get us back to the best district in the state. Although three candidates didn't participate, I hope they will make their positions known so you all know what you are voting for April 4th. Thank you PCE for hosting this event. I am running for School Board because we can do better. Our children deserve it
I was raised with the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." I believe it and as a Christian, I see this as the answer to all of the division and tension we see in our society and our schools. Things that divide and separate are destructive to us as citizens and prevent us all from reaching our true potential. The Board sets policies that either divide and conquer or unite and strengthen. If we treat others as the Golden Rule says, we will unite and strengthen.
